About the project

Built by one developer, for real-world use

Groupio started as a personal project to solve actual problems. Here's the story behind it.

Who I am

I'm an independent full-stack developer. I built Groupio entirely on my own — from database design to frontend UI — as a way to apply and improve my skills in a real-world context.

I've been using generative AI as a professional tool throughout development. The goal wasn't to let AI write the code for me, but to understand every line, stay in control of the architecture, and use AI to move faster and smarter.

Why I built this

Groupio started from a simple frustration: managing shared flats and group finances was messy. Tracking who paid what, assigning chores fairly, following up on tasks — none of it had a clean, single place to live.

So I built one. Not a startup idea or a side hustle — just a practical tool that solves the problem I actually had.

It also became my most complete real-world project to date: building something people could actually use while learning how to ship production-grade software.

How I approach it

Keep it free and genuinely useful — no paywalls, no feature-gating.

Write code I understand. Not copied, not blindly generated — written with intent.

Build for real users. Simple, practical, and reliable over impressive and bloated.

What's next

If Groupio continues to grow and attract users, I plan to keep investing time into it:

  • Improve existing features based on real feedback.
  • Add features that solve genuine problems, not just pad the feature list.
  • Keep the core product free.

If the platform gains enough traction, I'd love to build a native mobile app for better accessibility.

Supporting the project

Groupio is completely free to use. There are no subscriptions, no paid tiers, and no features locked behind a paywall. It runs on a small server that I pay for out of pocket.

  • Tips are entirely optional — the app works the same whether you tip or not.
  • A tip helps cover hosting costs and motivates continued development.
  • Tips do not unlock features or provide any special access (unless explicitly stated).

Support the project ☕

Groupio is free to use. If you find it useful, you can support it with a small tip — it helps keep the app running and improving.
